“Like an ancient galleon that has spent ages at sea, Christianity is
encrusted with customs and attitudes acquired on its voyage through the centuries and it is making the tragic mistake of confusing the accidents of theological and cultural history with eternal truth”
Richard Holloway, Doubts and Loves, What is Left of Christianity, p. 7.
[...] Quote of the day [...]
This is a great quote and one which really stuck in my head when I first read this book. The book itself challenged and saddened me.
I also found the book challenging but also encouraging as it seeks to affirm many aspects of Christian living. My last supervisor still has the book as I challenged him to read it.
Personally though when I first met Richard I found his views very challenging.
